According to the 2021 American Community Survey by the US Census Bureau, the population count for Hmong Americans was 368,609.

The Hmong population in the United States increased by 40% from 2000 to 2010. Most notable is the exponential population increase of Hmong relocating to Alaska and Southern states (134% from 2000 to 2010).

States with the highest populations are:

  • California (95,000)
  • Minnesota (70,000)
  • Wisconsin (50,000)
  • North Carolina, (20,000)
  • Michigan (15,000)

The 2010 census reports that of the total number of Hmong Americans:

  • 66% were US born and 34% were foreign born
  • 45.3% had no formal education
  • 34.8% were “linguistically isolated”
  • poverty rate all ages: 17%, poverty rate over 65: 16%

Education amongst Hmong Population:

  • High school or less: 46%
  • Some college: 31%n
  • Bachelor’s Degree 17%
  • Postgrad Degree 6%
