Geographic Distribution

There is substantial heterogeneity among the various Hispanic/Latino elder groups. They carry a unique historical and sociopolitical reality, which impacts who they are today.  The subgroups vary by their patterns of geographic distribution in the United States.

  • The Mexican American population tends to primarily reside in California, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Colorado
  • The Cuban population predominantly resides in Florida, Texas, California, New Jersey, and New York
  • The Puerto Rican population lives mostly in Florida, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts

In 2019, 60% of Hispanic persons aged 65 and over resided in three states: California (1.2 million), Texas (approximately 875,000), and Florida, (approximately 700,000) (USDHHS, AoA, 2020).
