Possible Barriers to Health Care Accessibility for elderly Asian Indian Immigrants

Accessibility to health care could be one the problems faced by the recently immigrant elderly:

  • lack of knowledge of the availability of health care
  • lack of health insurance
  • transportation – cannot use public transportation, cannot drive, dependent on their children
  • monetary – cost of treatment, expensive, most are dependent on their children
  • language – unable to communicate in English, lack of translation; inability to read medication labels in English
  • abandonment by adult children after immigration
  • learned helplessness
  • not wanting to burden their children financially
