Indicators of Conflicting Expectations

Cultural values affect behavior, attitudes, and beliefs about health care and treatment, as well as expectations of health care providers. Cultural bias colors the way that individuals perceive the world around themselves and their response to situations and persons.

Gaining an understanding of some potential areas of conflict in value systems will enhance the ability of the professional health care provider to collaborate successfully with American Indian elders in planning and implementing health care in a culturally congruent and respectful manner.
